There are 53 towns and five major cities in Kerala, a small state. Actually, even villages look like small towns, with high population density and many urban conveniences.
Thiruvananthapuram (the capital of Kerala), Cochin, Kozhikode, Kollam and Thrissur are the major cities. Palakkad, Kannur, Kottayam and Alappuzha are among the more important towns.
If you go to these cities and towns, in most cases, you are likely to feel that the places are actually just glorified villages. There is a proliferation of unplanned greenery, the roads and buildings are equally unplanned and the whole environment is one of informality. Only Ernakulam, part of Cochin Corporation, looks to have some semblance of planning with its gridlike streets.
We would look at the different places one by one. Some of the towns, like Munnar the tea garden hill, are not included in this section. They come under more specialized sections, like Green Hills for Munnar.
