With a long coastline, there is no shortage of beaches in Kerala. Which are the best beaches of Kerala?

Kovalam beach in southern Kerala is probably the best known internationally. However, there are other beaches which could cater to specific tastes.

For example, some might prefer the quiet charm of a shady beach road (pic right) or a quaint old beachfront (pic left). Both these pics were taken at the Cherai beach near Cochin.

Kerala's Best Beaches

Below is a list of beaches in Kerala that has been attracting tourists, listed from south to north:

• The Kovalam Beach: This internationally reputed tourist spot lies in southern Kerala
• Shanghumukhom Beach: This is located in the capital city of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram (or Trivandrum)
• Thirumallavaram Beach: Palm-fringed, charming beach north of Kollam (Quilon) town
• Mararikulam (or Alleppey) Beach: Another reputed beach, located in Alapuzha (Alleppey)
• Cherai Beach: A quiet, charming beach north of Kochi (Cochin)
• Kappad Beach: The historic spot where Vasco da Gama landed in 1498 AD, in Kozhikode (Calicut)
• Payyambalam Beach: With laterite cliffs (characteristic of north Kerala) jutting out into the sea, in Kannur (Cannanore)
• Kappil Beach: This secluded beach in northernmost Kerala is fast becoming a major tourist attraction
