Some time ago, an official from Japan had to come to Kerala. He was a first-time visitor to this place. His comment, in essence, was: KERALA IS GREEN!
Kerala is also a hilly place, with a mountain range extending across the whole of its eastern boundary. On the west lies the Arabian Sea. The midland between the mountains and the sea is not a flat plain. Instead, it is full of hills and valleys, with numerous rivers flowing across.
Greenery is everywhere. You would find rural homesteads covered by tall trees, with small dwellings in their midst. You would also find large stretches of green paddy fields or wild growths as you travel across the state. Along the sandy coast stand rows of coconut trees, a local trademark. On the mountains are dense forests with elephants, tigers, boars, snakes and other wildlife
Thus came the Green Hills of Kerala Green Hills.
You have a unique structure here. A long coastline facing the sea, with several seaside beaches. Inland lakes not far from this coast, with their own beaches. Some of the lakes have islands in their midst and one of them is famed for its own beaches.
In the midst of all this greenery live the most literate people in India. By all social indicators, Kerala is more comparable to developed countries than a developing one. Healthcare is good, infant mortality is low, slums are practically non-existent, women are active in all fields, political awareness is widespread and people are also aware of their rights.
Above all, a traveler would find that people are friendly and helpful.
The site was created by Gopinathan, who loves writing and photography. He lives in a rural area, in a home on a garden-(or forest-)like environment (pic left). Life is relaxed, except for the tensions associated with this website, as when electricity fails just when he wants to work, or goes high voltage destroying equipment.
When Internet connectivity reached this village around 2000 he began experimenting with websites. First came websites with researched data. Then he began to look around for topics with which he had first hand experience.
Thus was this site born, about his own state, Kerala. The National Geographic Traveler found it a top destination. The topic should interest people who love travel and greenery, he felt. And describing the innumerable attractions involved both writing and photography, his passions.
